"The Enlightenment"

I sometimes have trouble defining what kind of musician i am.
A mix between classical, rock, funk and world music.
And this video tends towards the world music side.


No structure, no tempo, lots of bends, i just followed the sitar sample and played over it.

Theory note : i used 3 scales to get close to the indian feel, mixolydian, mixolydian b6 and lydian.

J'ai parfois du mal à définir quel genre de musicien je suis.
Un mélange entre classique, rock, funk, et world music.
Et cette vidéo tendrais plutôt vers le coté world music.
Pas de structure, pas de tempo, beaucoup de bends, j'ai juste suivi le sample de sitar et joué par dessus.

"Mrs Funky Hippo"

I made this video to introduce the Yamaha RGX A2.
Even if the it's far from the Jem7v i like this guitar, especially the light weight.


I didn't plan much for this video, i had a theme and a short solo.
I decided to turn things over so i started with the solo, then played the theme and ended with a little improv.
Here's a weird out lick that came from nowhere when i was working on the solo.

You can see how i made the loop at the end of the video.

J'ai fait cette vidéo pour présenter ma Yamaha RGX A2.
Même si c'est très éloigné de la Jem7v j'adore cette guitare, particullièrement sa légèreté.
Pas de grosse préparation pour cette vidéo, j'avais un thème et un petit solo.
Par contre j'ai décidé de renverser les choses, j'ai donc commencé par le solo, puis le thème et enfin une petite impro.
Voici un plan "out" assez bizarre venu de nulle part quand je bossais sur le solo.

On peut voir à la fin de la vidéo l'élaboration du loop avec le Jamman.

"Lamentations of a lonely Mermaid"

May be my favorite video.
Like "A Tipsy Camel" i made the beat loop with FruityLoops.
I used once again a long delay for the "sea" chords or the lead guitar.
I had no idea at that point where i was going or what the song would refer to.
I was not looking for a theme / solo structure but i wanted two or three distinct parts.

The first part begins around 1min and is based on very long notes.
The second part begins around 1min 43s and has lot more notes and speed, ending at 1min 55 with that sweep+tap lick. I spent a few hours working on that one !
It ends ( 2min 05s ) where the third part begins, back to long notes, even longer than the first part because i used the EBow and its infinite sustain. It's also the whammy bar moment, used in a "Jeff Beck" way to play the notes. Very tricky because the bar needs the right pression from you hand and arm to play the right note !

Peut être ma vidéo préférée.
Comme "A Tipsy Camel" j'ai créé le le premier loop avec FruityLoops
J'ai utilisé encore une fois un long delay pour les accords et la guitare lead.
Je n'avais aucunes idées à ce moment où j'allais ou bien de quoi la chanson traiterais.
Je ne cherchais pas un structure type thème / solo mais je voulais quand même deux ou trois parties bien distinctes.

La première partie commence vers 1min et est basé sur des notes très longues.
La deuxième partie commence vers 1min 43s et a beaucoup plus de notes et de rapidité, finissant vers 1min 55s avec un plan sweeping + tapping. J'ai passé quelques heures à bosser sur ce plan !
La dernière partie commence vers 2min 05s, retour aux notes longues et même très longues gràce à l'utilisation du EBow et de son sustain infini. C'est également la partie où j'utilise la barre vibrato à la façon Jeff Beck pour jouer les notes. Pas si facile puisqu'il faut exercer une force bien précise venant de la main et du bras pour jouer la note exacte désirée.

"A Tipsy Camel"

I wanted to try something new with the Jamman.
So instead of using the usual Jamman beat, i created a simple loop with Fruityloops and sent it from the computer to the jamman through usb port.
You can hear it at the very begining of the video, this is the loop.


Drop D guitar, theme / solo / theme structure, lots of Whammy bar, harmonics and tapping.
Especially the famous Buckethead lick around 2min 49s.

And of course that middle-east feel...don't you picture a slightly drunk camel ?

Je voulais essayer quelque chose de nouveau avec le Jamman.
Donc au lieu d'utiliser le beat d'origine du Jamman, j'ai créé un loop très simple avec le logiciel FruityLoops que j'ai ensuite exporté de l'ordinateur vers le jamman grâce au port usb de celui-ci.
C'est le loop que l'on entend au tout début de la vidéo.
Une guitare en drop D, une structure de type solo / thème / solo, beaucoup de barre vibrato, harmoniques et tapping.
Particulièrement la fameux tapping façon Buckethead que l'on peut entendre vers 2min 49s. (voir image )
Et bien sur ce coté moyen oriental...n'imaginez-vous pas un chameau légèrement éméché ?

"Keep Walking"

Another / theme / solo /theme / solo / "mini-song" over 3 chords,
B5 Asus2 E5 .



For the loop i added just two guitars to the Jamman beat, one rythm and one "bass-like". As you can see not many overdubs because i needed it at the end of the song.
The lead guitar has a deeper and longer delay than usual.

Another "Steve Vai-ish" lick around 1min 27s.


Also more whammy bar use in this song.
Here's the lick around 1min 36s.

I am very fond of that kind of arabic and middle eastern feel.

I thought it would be funny to add some bloopers at the end of the video.
I always make several takes when i record because it's not always perfect the first time. I say the first time because when i record, it's a live capture of what i play. It's not a video edited over a backing track file. So there are mistakes, glitches, sometimes improv.

Pour la boucle je n'ai ajouté que deux guitares au beat du Jamman, une guitare rythmique et une guitare "façon-basse".
Pas d'excès dans les overdubs, j'en avais besoin pour la fin de la chanson.
Une guitare lead avec un delay un peu plus long et présent que d'habitude.

Vers 1min 27s un plan très Steve Vai. ( voir image )

Également plus de barre vibrato dans cette mimi-compo.
Le plan vers 1min 36s a un coté moyen-orient que j'adore. ( voir image )

J'ai pensé qu'il serait assez marrant d'ajouter un bêtisier à la fin de la vidéo.
Je fais toujours plusieurs prises quand j'enregistre pour la simple et bonne raison que c'est pas toujours parfait dès la première prise.
Je dit première prise parce que lorsque j'enregistre, c'est une prise en direct de ce que je joue. Ce n'est pas un montage vidéo sur un play-back. Il y a donc imprévus, des erreurs, parfois des impros.

I started this blog in english but some of my fellow french friends have been whining about it.
So i will keep it in english but i will also add the translation in french at the end of the post. ( the closest translation anyway )

"Mellow"

I wanted to try something with a different kind of atmosphere.
Once again i used the jamman to create the background loop.
It sounded so slow and quiet that i decided to play with a mellifluous tone guitar.
The result was so mellow that it became the title !
As before i wanted to keep a structure like theme / solo / theme / solo .


Not much to tell except that i even worked harder on the solos.

Pour cette video je voulais essayer quelque chose de différent, une atmosphère moins rock, plutôt "ambiance".
Une fois n'est pas coutume le Jamman m'a servi pour le fond sonore.
Cela sonnait tellement calme et lent qu'il me fallait une guitare très douce et feutrée.
Le résultat fut tellement "moelleux" que cela devint le titre de cette mini compo.
Comme précédemment j'ai essayé de garder une structure theme / solo / theme / solo.
Rien d'autre à dire si ce n'est que les solos m'ont demandé encore plus de boulot !

"The Funky Shrimp"

Another Jamman piece. At that time i was starting to feel comfortable with the jamman and the effects. I also tried to add some structure between riff,theme and solos. It's not just an improv over a riff like the "funky hippo". I spent quite some time creating the guitar solos.


The kinda "out" lick that you can hear around 1min 28s was inspired by Paul Gilbert. I remembered a video lesson where he was showing some cool stuff over basic pentatonic shapes.

Encore une mini compo avec le Jamman.
A cette période je commençais à me sentir à l'aise avec le Jamman et les effets.
J'ai essayé d'apporter plus de structure entre riff, thème et solos.
Ce n'est pas juste une longue impro sur un riff comme "Funky Hippo". J'ai passé pas mal de temps à créer et bosser les solos.
Le plan "out" que l'on peut entendre vers 1min 28s est inspiré de Paul Gilbert.
Je me souviens d'une leçon vidéo où il montrait pas mal de super plans basé sur la position basique pentatonique.

Ebow and "Reverse"

The thing i like with the Jamman is that i can build in real time a musical atmosphere.
I just need to find the right effects.
Now let me introduce the amazing, the spectacular EBow.

It is an electronic bow that produces infnite sustain.
I use it when i want to create some deep "relaxing / hypnotizing" atmosphere.


I was experimentating on this video. There are some weird sounds and no really structure. But i like the "reverse-like" effect so much...which is in that case a type of delay ( reverse delay ). It sounds like playing a music backwards.

Ce que j'adore avec le Jamman c'est la possibilité de construire en temps réel une atmosphère musicale.
Il suffit juste de trouver les bons effets.
Ce qui est pour moi l'occasion de présenter le fabuleux, l'extraordinaire EBow.
C'est un archet électronique qui produit un sustain infini.
Je l'utilise lorsque je veux créer des atmosphères planantes.
Pas mal d'expérimentation dans cette vidéo. Il y a des sons étranges et pas vraiment de structure.
Mais je trouve l'effet "à l'envers" tellement cool...qui dans le cas précis est un type particulier de delay ( reverse delay ).

"Crazy Kung Fu Mosquito"

Another really short piece that i keep even if i'm not completely satisfied. The reason is very simple, i forgot to turn off the beat that i use to record the first guitar ( the percussive one ). And it's really annonying. I will have to record it again one day.


The title came right away, i listened and pictured in a video game style a crazy flying mosquito doing some kick ass kung fu moves...

Une autre mini-compo que je garde même si je ne suis pas complètement satisfait du résultat.
La raison est simple, j'ai oublié de supprimer le beat au son de métronome du jamman que j'utilise pour enregistrer la première guitare percussive.
C'est très gênant, il faudra que je réenregistre cela un jour prochain.
Le titre m'est venu tout de suite, à l'écoute j'ai tout de suite imaginé un genre de jeux-vidéo avec un moustique virevoltant faisant du kung fu...

"One Second" delay

One of my favorite video. The idea is very simple. A one second delay means that when you play a note, it repeats itself one second later. So i decided to built a basic harmony using the notes played over the notes i played the second before.
Sounds like there are two guitar players but no, only one.

note : with that kind of long delay, if you make just one mistake, you will hear it two times, when you're actually making it and one second later. "twice the fun" !

Une de mes vidéos favorites.
L'idée est simple, un delay d'une seconde veut dire que lorsque l'on joue une note, elle se répète une seconde plus tard.
Ce qui veut dire qu'à un instant t, on entend deux notes, celle jouée à l'instant t et celle répétée, jouée à l'instant t moins 1 seconde.
Je me suis donc efforcé de composer une harmonie simple à partir des notes jouées et des notes répétées.
Le résultat est que l'on a l'impression qu'il y a deux guitaristes. Mais non !

Ce qui est amusant avec ce genre de delay c'est que si l'on fait une seule erreur, elle s'entendra deux fois, au moment où l'on fait l'erreur et une seconde plus tard.
Deux fois plus de plaisir !

The Jamman and "The Funky Hippo"

My first video with the Jamman.

I keep this video because it shows what you can do with the Jamman and its limitations. The Jamman is a looper, that means it plays on a loop something you recorded. The cool thing is that you can add other phrases over each previous recordings ( overdubs ), virtually as much as you want but technically 5 overdubs at the most. Or the overall sound will be messy, as you can here in the video when i add too many guitars.



note : i use an harmonizer effect on the "hippo shaking his butt" riff ( 0min 35s ) which adds a fifth below and an octave below.

Directly inspired from Steve Vai's song "The Animal" .

Première vidéo avec le Jamman.
Je la garde en ligne puisqu'elle montre vraiment ce que l'on peut faire avec un Jamman et les limites de celui-ci.
En gros le Jamman permet d'enregistrer des phrases et de les répéter en boucles.
Ce qui est vraiment sympa c'est d'empiler plusieurs phrases les unes par dessus les autres ( overdubs ) pour créer un réel accompagnement, ou simplement une nappe sonore.
Attention à ne pas trop enregistrer de phrases pour une même boucle ( 5 maximum ), sinon le son résultant sera de l'ordre de la bouillie sonore.
On peut en avoir un aperçu à la fin de la vidéo lorsque j'empile trop de guitares !
L'effet utilisé pour le riff de l'hippopotame qui se trémousse le popotin ( 0min 35s ) est un harmonizer qui ajoute une quinte ( à l'octave inférieure ) et une octave inférieure. ( voir l'image correspondante )

"Eat This", first video

Let's be honest, i was just showing off on this one.
This was the first time i posted a video on youtube, i was so proud of the Jem, i thought "hey i'm gonna play something for the eyes".

For this little "showing off" piece i used a delay Boss DD3 ( i didn't have the GT-8 at that time ).

set up :
E.Level : 9/10
F.Back : min
D.Time : arround 300ms

The idea came from Nuno Bettencourt with his flight of the wounded bumble bee on the Extreme album Pornograffitti.
It's nothing more than a trick with the delay and you sound super fast.
As you can see, the first part is pure A minor pentatonic.

I can't hide my "classical roots" in the second and third parts.
The second part is a right hand tapping with two fingers.
The third part is a left hand tapping. The right hand coming on the top of the neck ( which looks so cool ) is there to prevent the strings from vibrating, nothing more.

100% frime, je l'avoue.
Première vidéo, avec en plus la Jem dont j'étais très fier ( je le suis toujours ).
Je me suis dit : " autant faire un truc visuel " !

L'idée m'est venue du morceau "flight of the wounded bumble bee" de Nuno Bettencourt sur l'album d'Extreme Pornograffitti.
Le delay donne l'impression que l'on joue très vite. Mais comme le montre l'exemple en image c'est une simple gamme pentatonique que je monte et descend !
Les deuxième et troisième parties trahissent mon passé "classique".
La deuxième partie est simplement un tapping main droite à deux doigts.
La troisième partie est un tapping main gauche. Avec la main droite qui vient sur le haut du manche pour empêcher les cordes de résonner à vide. C'est juste une question de propreté, ni plus ni moins . ( mais ça en jette toujours )
